Evolution Lucky 7 Porter Review: Seven Malts, One Smooth Ride

If there is one thing a nomad needs after a long day of working at the campground, it’s a reliable, roasty porter that feels like a campfire in a glass. I recently stopped by The West End in Quakertown, PA, and decided to revisit a brewery I’ve followed for a while: Evolution Craft Brewing Co.

Beer bottle spilling dark lager into a foamy glass on a granite counter. Label reads "Lucky 7." Splash and droplets in motion.

Score: 8.2

Location: Salisbury, MD

ABV: 5.8%

I’ve had my fair share of Evolution brews, but the Lucky 7 Porter has officially taken the top spot as my favorite so far. The fact that Brewery is from my home state just adds to the enjoyment.

Appearance & Aroma

Pouring this beauty reveals a deep, near black liquid with brilliant garnet highlights. On the nose, it’s all about the dark side: bittersweet chocolate, fresh ground coffee, and a very subtle hint of pecan smoke.

Tasting Notes: A Symphony of Seven

The first sip is surprisingly smooth for a beer with such a complex malt bill.

  • The Lead: Rich cocoa and toasted bread.

  • The Middle: A slight sweetness think dark toffee and dried plums—that keeps the roasted bitterness from becoming too sharp.

  • The Finish: A faint, peppery smoke note (thanks to the smoked malt) rounds out the finish, leaving you with a clean, slightly dry aftertaste.

Field Notes: The Perfect Pairing

While I was at The West End, I paired the Lucky 7 with their brisket fries. If you haven't tried this combo, you're missing out. The smokiness of the porter amplifies the charred edges of the brisket, while the carbonation cleanses the palate from the rich, salty fries.

It’s one of those rare pairings where the food and the beer actually make each other better.

The Nomad’s Verdict

The Lucky 7 Porter isn't a "heavy" porter that sits like a meal in your stomach. It’s remarkably drinkable at 5.8% ABV, making it a great companion for a cool Pennsylvania evening. This is a beer I will definitely be buying again—and probably keeping a few in the cooler for the next stop.
