From Flames to F250: The Evolution of the Nomads Gambit

It has been an incredible, challenging, and ultimately rewarding year for our life on the road. If you’ve been following our journey, you know that transportation isn't just about getting from A to B for us—it’s about our home.

Farewell to the Rouge Bus

We started this chapter by saying goodbye to our first fully converted 2009 shuttle bus. I built that bus with my own two hands, and she served as our sanctuary for four amazing years. Letting go of "The Rouge Bus" was tough; she was our home, but we knew it was time to upgrade to something with more space and better functionality.

Building the Nomads Gambit Trailer

Our next move was purchasing a 1998 Jayco travel trailer. To be honest, she was a rough example and needed a complete overhaul. Once again, I took on the remodel myself. Now, "The Nomads Gambit" trailer is officially our home. While there are still a few small finishing touches to manage, she provides us with exactly what we were missing: more room, a functional bathroom, and true comfort.

The Tundra Tragedy

With the trailer ready, we needed a rig to pull it. We traded the Rouge Bus for a 2002 Toyota Tundra. It seemed like a great deal and treated us well—until it didn't.

During our move from Virginia to Pennsylvania, we hit a devastating setback. The Tundra caught fire and burned up, leaving us stranded in Frederick, MD, for nearly a week. Finding a replacement truck on short notice was impossible, and professional towing fees were astronomical.

A massive thank you to Todd and Jenn: They drove out to us and finished the tow when we were at our lowest. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Introducing Bonny: Our New Powerhouse

After being without wheels since November, working two jobs, and saving every penny, we finally have our new rig.

Meet Bonny, our 2009 F250 Crew Cab. She has a fascinating history as a former K9 Search and Rescue truck from Texas. She’s in great shape with low miles, and she’s officially the new muscle behind The Nomads Gambit trailer.

What’s Next?

The work has already begun! This past weekend, I stripped out the unnecessary items in the cab and fixed a few lingering issues. I’ve already removed the back seat to make way for a custom storage system and a dedicated Gambit platform.

There are plenty more upgrades coming for Bonny to make her perfectly functional for our lifestyle. Stay tuned for more updates as we get back on the road!
