Frozen in PA: The Reality of Winter Trailer Living

They say travel trailer living is all about freedom and "following the sun." Well, right now, the sun feels like a distant memory, and the freedom is currently buried under 16 inches of fresh powder.

If you’ve been following my journey, you know I’m no stranger to the road. But let’s get real: Winter in Pennsylvania is not for the meek. This isn’t just a "chilly" season; this is hands down the most brutal winter I’ve faced in over a decade.

The Frozen Reality: Sub 20 and Shoveling

This week has been a test of endurance. We haven't seen a temperature north of 20°F, and the forecast says we aren't going to anytime soon.

I’ve spent the better part of the last three days playing a high stakes game of "Where’s the Gravel?" clearing snow off the site. Even with:

  • Insulated boots and heavy-duty gloves

  • Chemical hand and foot warmers tucked into every crevice

  • Multiple layers of thermal gear

...the cold still finds a way in. It’s the kind of deep, biting chill that leads to perpetually dry skin and lips so chapped they’ve become a permanent accessory.

Sanctuary in the Shell

Despite the chaos outside, the "tin can" is holding its own. It’s an eye opening experience realizing how much work goes into keeping a mobile home stationary in these conditions. My days are a rhythm of:

  • Draft Hunting: Finding every microscopic air leak and sealing it up.

  • Pipe Management: The constant vigilance of making sure the water lines don't turn into ice blocks.

  • Hydration (The Fun Kind): There has been a lot of hot tea and hot chocolate consumed to keep the internal thermostat running.

Inside, it’s cozy. Outside, it’s a frozen tundra. That contrast does a lot of heavy lifting for your mental state when you're staring out the window at another storm front moving in for the weekend.

Rethinking the "Where To Next?"

This winter has been more than just a physical challenge; it’s been a reality check for future plans. I’ve always had my eye on the mountains of West Virginia, but after this week? I’m having some second thoughts.

If this is what a "bad" winter looks like here, I’m starting to think the Carolinas are looking much more attractive than the Virginia highlands.

  • West Virginia: Beautiful, but maybe too much of a gamble for trailer life.

  • Virginia: Feeling like a lost cause at this point.

  • NC/SC: Currently looking like the Promised Land of "Above Freezing."

Looking Ahead

The goal for the next few days is simple: Stay inside. I’ve done my time in the snow trenches; it’s time for some indoor projects where the thermostat is within reach and the wind doesn't bite.

Living this way teaches you exactly what you’re made of and exactly how much propane you can go through in a week. Stay warm out there, everyone.
