Kentucky Vanilla Barrel Cream Ale: A Smooth, Balanced Sipper

Looking for a beer that hits that sweet spot between a refreshing cream ale and a decadent dessert? Kentucky Vanilla Barrel Cream Ale by Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. is a staple in the world of barrel-aged brews. I recently sat down with a cold one to see if it lives up to the hype.

Score: 7.4

Location: Lexington, KY

ABV: 5.5%

The Flavor Profile

This beer is all about balance. Often, barrel aged beers can lean too heavily into the "boozy" or "cloying" territory, but this one keeps its feet on the ground.

  • Bitterness vs. Sweetness: It strikes a fantastic chord here. There is just enough hop character to keep the sweetness from becoming overwhelming, making it incredibly drinkable.

  • The Vanilla Factor: Here is where my personal preference kicks in. While the vanilla is certainly present offering those classic marshmallow and cream notes, I found myself wishing it were just a little more prominent. If you’re a "vanilla forward" fanatic, you might find the barrel notes (oak and bourbon) slightly overshadowing the bean.

  • Mouthfeel: True to the "Cream Ale" name, it is remarkably smooth. The carbonation is fine, and it goes down easy regardless of the season.

The Verdict

While I’ve had "vanilla bombs" that hit that specific craving a bit harder, this remains a very solid, high-quality craft beer. It’s a versatile choice that doesn't feel too heavy for a casual afternoon but has enough complexity for a slow evening sip.

Final Rating: 7.4/10

It is definitely worth a drink, especially if you prefer a beer where the barrel aging whispers rather than shouts.
