The Luck of the Irish? A Mixed Review of Becker’s Corner in Quakertown, PA

They say you find the best spots when you aren't looking for them. In my case, a power outage at the campground and a failed attempt at home-cooked corned beef led me straight to the doorstep of Becker’s Corner.

Wooden bar interior with chairs, cozy restaurant setting with stone walls, and exterior of a stone building with a steeple under a blue sky.

The Atmosphere: A Slice of the UK in PA

Walking into Becker’s Corner, I thought I’d struck gold. It has that immediate, unmistakable soul of an old British or Irish pub. It’s small, cozy, and centered around a classic U-shaped bar. With a few TVs humming in the background and blessedly no loud music, it’s the kind of place built for actual conversation.

Even on St. Patrick’s Day, the vibe was welcoming. I’m a solo traveler, and while the bar was packed, the staff couldn't have been kinder. A lovely waitress, fully decked out for the holiday, ushered me to a four-top high-top and made me feel right at home despite taking up the extra space.

The Drink

I started exactly where you should on March 17th: a Guinness. It was poured well, and the ambiance was set. Later, I followed up with an Appalachian Celtic Knot Red Ale a solid, flavorful choice that I’d highly recommend if you see it on the tap list.

The Food: A Tale of Two Plates

Here is where the "luck" ran out. I ordered the Corned Beef Brisket Special ($20.95), expecting the hearty, bold flavors of a pub that looks this authentic.

Plate with sliced corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes, sprinkled with pepper. A dark drink is partially visible in the wooden background.

The Disappointment:

  • The Meat: It felt like lunch meat quality tough, chewy, and lacked the "brisket" soul.

  • The Sides: The menu promised Colcannon, but I was served what appeared to be canned potatoes with very little seasoning and a flavorless chunk of cabbage.

  • The Value: For over $20, the portion was dismal. It was a somber meal eaten in silence.

The Redemption (The Takeout): Before heading back to the dark campground, I ordered the Bangers and Mash to go for Gambit. I stole a bite (for science, of course) and the difference was night and day. Real mashed potatoes, savory onion gravy, and high-quality sausages. This was the meal I should have had. Gambit certainly didn't complain—he polished it off in record time.

The Verdict

Becker's Corner is a place I want to love. The service is top tier and the "bones" of the pub are exactly what a traveler looks for.

While their St. Patrick’s Day corned beef was, unfortunately, the worst I’ve had at a premium price point, the Bangers and Mash proved the kitchen has real potential. If I weren't leaving the area, I’d go back on a random Tuesday to try their standard menu.

Final Thought: Go for the vibes and the beer, but maybe skip the holiday "specials" and stick to the pub classics.

We go to Beckers quite often and their food is always good!...and the service super friendly and welcoming...sorry this Irish meal was subpar....you need to go back and try a meal again...my only complaint is they tend to have a lot of spicy additions to their meals and I dont care for spicy foods....ie their meatloaf has Chipotle sauce etc. And the regular menu doesn't seem to ever change or have any new additions...it does have some very good items on it...they have a few daily specials but once again they seem to lean towards spicier entrees....but I love this place....lots of character and cozy...and its nice and local
