Unexpected Treasure: Goose Island Bourbon County Chocolate Praline Stout

There is a certain thrill that comes with walking into your local haunt and seeing a "whale" on the tap list that you weren’t expecting. That’s exactly what happened today while I was sitting at the bar of The West End in Quakertown, PA.

As a self proclaimed stout junkie, I’ve had my fair share of barrel-aged heavy hitters, but the Goose Island Bourbon County Chocolate Praline Stout had never been on my "must-find" list. But finding it on a random Saturday after shopping? Pure kismet.

Goose Island Chocolate Praline Barrel Aged Stout

Score: 9.4

Location: Chicago, IL

ABV: 14.6%

The Pour and The Experience

Clocking in at a massive 14.6% ABV, this isn't just a beer; it's a slow-sipping experience.

  • The Flavor Profile: The first thing you notice is the balance. With a name like "Chocolate Praline," you might expect a sugar bomb, but Goose Island nailed the restraint here. The sweetness is present but never overpowering.

  • The Mouthfeel: It’s thick, velvety, and coats the palate perfectly.

  • The Finish: This is where the magic happens. The bourbon heat hits on the back end, but it’s incredibly smooth and delightful rather than harsh. It warms you from the inside out.

The Details

Brewed in Chicago then aged in freshly emptied bourbon Barrels such as Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, & wild Turkey. Made with coco nibs, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts & dates. Then ages in non-climate controled barrel houses.

Why It’s a Must-Try

It’s rare to find a beer this high in alcohol that remains so approachable and nuanced. Every sip reveals a little more of that nutty, toasted praline goodness mixed with rich dark chocolate.

Verdict: This was an amazing find that I never expected today. It lived up to the hype and then some.

I couldn't leave well enough alone I ended up grabbing a 4-pack to go because a stout this good deserves an encore performance at home. If you're near Quakertown, stop by The West End and see if they have any left. You won't regret it.
